Commemorating the 76th Anniversary of the Jasenovac Breakout

Honoring the victims of the genocide at Jasenovac, Jadovno, and across the Independent State of Croatia

On April 22, 2021, the Jasenovac Research Institute marked the 76th anniversary of the heroic breakout from the Jasenovac death camp with a commemorative wreath-laying ceremony at the Holocaust Memorial Park in Brooklyn, New York.

Remembering the Victims and Heroes of Jasenovac

On April 22nd 2021 the Jasenovac Research Institute marked the
76th anniversary of the prisoners’ breakout from the Jasenovac
death camp by laying a wreath at the Jasenovac monument at
New York’s Holocaust Memorial Park in Brooklyn. Flowers were
also laid at the Jadovno monument
In speeches by Barry Lituchy
and John Bosnitch, participants were reminded of the hundreds of
thousands of victims in the triple genocide committed by the Croatian
fascists against Serbs, Jews and Romas.
 They were also reminded
that only fewer than a hundred of the thousand or more remaining
prisoners survived the breakout, and that they gave their lives with
the single hope and aim that the truth of what happened at Jasenovac
would be told to the world.
Starving and unarmed in the rain they
forced a heroic breakout on that day in the face of rifle and machine
gun fire.
We recommit ourselves to educating the world to the massive
crimes of genocide committed at Jasenovac, Jadovno, and
hundreds of other sites by Croatian fascists in the Independent
State of Croatia and by the Nazis in former Yugoslavia.

Let's not let the world forget the terrible price paid by Serbs, Jews, Romas, and anti-fascists in the struggle against Croatian and German fascism
