Remembering the Victims and Heroes of Jasenovac
The 2022 Jasenovac Research Institute International Conference, titled “Jasenovac in the Context of Other Genocides in the 20th Century”, brought together distinguished scholars and researchers to examine the atrocities committed at Jasenovac and place them within the broader framework of genocides throughout the last century. The event offered a unique opportunity to compare historical experiences, deepen understanding of genocidal ideologies, and reaffirm the importance of remembrance and truth.
This important conference was sponsored by the Jasenovac Research Institute, continuing its mission to document and educate about the crimes committed in the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) during World War II, as well as to foster dialogue about genocide prevention worldwide.
Among the featured speakers was Prof. Gideon Greif, a renowned historian of the Holocaust, who presented a compelling lecture entitled “Two Hells on Earth: Auschwitz and Jasenovac – A Comparative View”. His analysis explored the similarities and differences between these two infamous death camps, shedding light on the methods of extermination, the ideologies driving them, and the suffering endured by the victims.

Dr. Aleksandar Stojanović of the Institute for Contemporary History in Serbia addressed “The Genocide Against Serbs and the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Independent State of Croatia 1941–1945”. His presentation provided a meticulously researched account of the NDH’s systematic campaign against the Serbian population and religious institutions, highlighting the lasting consequences of these atrocities.
Barry Lituchy, Executive Director of the Jasenovac Research Institute, served as the moderator for the conference and contributed his own presentation on “The Development of Fascism and Genocide in the Ukraine”. His talk examined historical and contemporary patterns of fascist ideology in the region, connecting them to broader themes of intolerance and mass violence.
